Morchella conica Morel Mushroom, Black Morel. Morchella conica is an old binomial name previously applied to species of fungi in the Morchellaceae family. It is one of three scientific names that had been commonly used to describe black morels. The crown is conical. Morchella conica is more shade-tolerant and hygrophilous than other morels. It is also hollow inside. It has a brownish or brownish-gray bonnet that has joined with a foot, which eventually becomes brown. Hat up to 5 cm in diameter, height up to 10 cm, conical or elongate-ovate with regular oblong cells. Vertical (with horizontal partitions) "ribs" can be more dark, even almost black. The flesh is waxy, with a mild fungal odor. Leg (2-5 cm long and 1.5 - 3 cm in diameter) cylindrical, hollow, whitish or yellowish, brittle. It is smooth or with dents (folds) of longitudinal form.
