Introduced from Mexico in 1800, zinnias have become an all-American favorite. They come in many heights and colors and are unequaled as cut flowers. The zinnia's march to glory began around 1875, when double "dahlia" flowered types were developed. By 1900, there were giant doubles, dwarf doubles and miniatures, but colors were still were undependable. This mix offers flowers in scarlet, rose, orange and yellow. When to Plant: Direct sow in early spring after the danger of frost has passed. Sequential plantings every 2--4weeks apart will provide continuous color and bouquets. Fresh Cut Flowers: Harvest bouquets in early morning or late afternoon hours. Collect flowers that are completely open, removing leaves below the water line. Zinnias have a vase life of 5-7 days. Overhead watering is not recommended. Harvest flowers regularly to encourage more blooms. Requirements: Adores full sunshine, prefers well drained soil. To reduce diseases, plant in areas that have good air circulation. Ph between 6.0 to 6.5. Apply fertilizer at a rate of 1.5 to 2.0 pounds of actual nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft. Use 1-1-1 ratio fertilizer is adequate. Apply a portion of fertilizer at planting, some in late June and a final application August 1st.
